James Houchins was in the War of 1812, Enlisted in the Virginia Militia at Giles Courthouse, Giles County, Virginia, serving as a private in a company designated as Capt. James Hobson's and Capt. David Hudson's Company 4th Virginia Regiment, in the command known as "The Giles Troops," his service commenced 16 July 1814, and he was paid 13 February, 1815, and marched with the British until the end of the war in 1815.
